There are places you visit, and then there are places that change you. Cape Town was the latter for me. Living in this city for three years was ongoing discovery that often left me speechless.

Every time I thought I had seen it all, Cape Town revealed another hidden gem, another trail, another meal, and another sunset that made me fall in love again. There really are endless things to do in Cape Town. And beyond the places and experiences, it was the friendships, the people I met, and all the memories I made along the way that I will carry with me wherever I go!

Anyways, let’s get to the experiences!

1. Hike Up Lion’s Head for Spectacular Views

If you’re searching for the best things to do in Cape Town, hiking Lion’s Head is an essential experience. One of the most well-known hikes in Cape Town, Lion’s Head offers breathtaking 360-degree views of the city, ocean, and mountains. For the best experience, go with a local guide (I can recommend a great one!) who will ensure you take the safest and most scenic route. Try going at sunrise or sunset for an extra magical experience and to avoid the crowds, it can get busy!

While this is the most popular trail, there are incredible, less crowded hikes such as Newlands Forest, Cecilia Forest, and Silvermine, all offering beautiful scenery and peaceful trails without the heavy foot traffic.

2. Conquer Table Mountain via Platteklip Gorge

Table Mountain is a must-visit, and while many take the cable car up, adventure lovers should consider hiking Platteklip Gorge. I won’t lie—this hike is tough. The steep, seemingly endless stairs had me breathless, but the moment I reached the top, every ounce of effort was worth it. For those who prefer a more moderate route, explore Skeleton Gorge or India Venster. After the climb, take the cable car down and enjoy the panoramic ride. I can’t say this enough, please, get a mountain guide!

High tea at Mount Nelson is a long-standing tradition in Cape Town. Craig, a tea connoisseur, will guide you through the vast selection of teas, tailoring recommendations to your taste preferences. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a long, relaxing meal surrounded by nature. The menu includes freshly made pizzas and light Mediterranean-inspired dishes, ideal for a laid-back yet refined experience. They don’t take reservations, so it’s first come, first serve—arrive early to grab a spot.

5. Explore Kloof Street’s Unique Cafés & Boutiques

Kloof Street is lined with stunning architecture, trendy cafés, and boutique stores. In 2022, Time Out ranked it among the coolest streets in the world, recognizing its vibrant energy, diverse dining options, and creative spaces. This street perfectly blends Cape Town’s energy with its relaxed atmosphere, making it a must-visit. Whether you’re shopping, people-watching, or simply soaking in the atmosphere, Kloof Street is an experience in itself.

This diverse street offers independent boutiques featuring local and artisanal products. Visit AJKP for fashion, Purr for stylish finds, FOM for local contemporary, outdoorsy pieces, and Olive Branch for some of South Africa’s best olive oils and rooibos tea, a must-try local specialty. For a break between shopping, stop by some of Kloof Street’s best cafés: Blondie for some easy lunch options, Egghead for a cozy, laid-back vibe, or Yours Truly, which transforms into a lively bar in the evenings with a good selection of drinks and music.

For a relaxed evening, head to Upper Union or Ëlgr, two of Cape Town’s best cocktail and dining spots. If you prefer, you can also rent a bike and explore the promenade at your own pace, stop at a tidal pool for a refreshing dip (warning: it’s freezing!), and end with a well-deserved ice cream treat.
