20 Unforgettable Things to Do in Cape Town

Adventure, food, Beautiful Views & Hidden Gems

There are places you visit, and then there are places that change you. Cape Town was the latter for me. Living in this city for three years was ongoing discovery that often left me speechless.

Every time I thought I had seen it all, Cape Town revealed another hidden gem, another trail, another meal, and another sunset that made me fall in love again. There really are endless things to do in Cape Town. And beyond the places and experiences, it was the friendships, the people I met, and all the memories I made along the way that I will carry with me wherever I go!

Anyways, let’s get to the experiences!

1. Hike Up Lion’s Head for Spectacular Views

If you’re searching for the best things to do in Cape Town, hiking Lion’s Head is an essential experience. One of the most well-known hikes in Cape Town, Lion’s Head offers breathtaking 360-degree views of the city, ocean, and mountains. For the best experience, go with a local guide (I can recommend a great one!) who will ensure you take the safest and most scenic route. Try going at sunrise or sunset for an extra magical experience and to avoid the crowds, it can get busy!

While this is the most popular trail, there are incredible, less crowded hikes such as Newlands Forest, Cecilia Forest, and Silvermine, all offering beautiful scenery and peaceful trails without the heavy foot traffic.

2. Conquer Table Mountain via Platteklip Gorge

Table Mountain is a must-visit, and while many take the cable car up, adventure lovers should consider hiking Platteklip Gorge. I won’t lie—this hike is tough. The steep, seemingly endless stairs had me breathless, but the moment I reached the top, every ounce of effort was worth it. For those who prefer a more moderate route, explore Skeleton Gorge or India Venster. After the climb, take the cable car down and enjoy the panoramic ride. I can’t say this enough, please, get a mountain guide!

3. Indulge in High Tea at Mount Nelson

High tea at Mount Nelson is a long-standing tradition in Cape Town. Craig, a tea connoisseur, will guide you through the vast selection of teas, tailoring recommendations to your taste preferences. The menu is constantly updated, so there’s always something new to try, making every visit unique. High tea here is more than just a meal—it’s a cherished tradition. Locals often celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, and special occasions here, dressing up for the experience and taking plenty of selfies to capture the moment.

4. Spend the Day at The Fountain Restaurant, Mount Nelson

A newer addition to Cape Town’s dining scene, The Fountain Restaurant offers a serene escape in the lush gardens of Mount Nelson. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a long, relaxing meal surrounded by nature. The menu includes freshly made pizzas and light Mediterranean-inspired dishes, ideal for a laid-back yet refined experience. They don’t take reservations, so it’s first come, first serve—arrive early to grab a spot.

5. Explore Kloof Street’s Unique Cafés & Boutiques

Kloof Street is lined with stunning architecture, trendy cafés, and boutique stores. In 2022, Time Out ranked it among the coolest streets in the world, recognizing its vibrant energy, diverse dining options, and creative spaces. This street perfectly blends Cape Town’s energy with its relaxed atmosphere, making it a must-visit. Whether you’re shopping, people-watching, or simply soaking in the atmosphere, Kloof Street is an experience in itself.

This diverse street offers independent boutiques featuring local and artisanal products. Visit AJKP for fashion, Purr for stylish finds, FOM for local contemporary, outdoorsy pieces, and Olive Branch for some of South Africa’s best olive oils and rooibos tea, a must-try local specialty. For a break between shopping, stop by some of Kloof Street’s best cafés: Blondie for some easy lunch options, Egghead for a cozy, laid-back vibe, or Yours Truly, which transforms into a lively bar in the evenings with a good selection of drinks and music.

6. Sip Cocktails at Upper Union or Ëlgr

For a relaxed evening, head to Upper Union or Ëlgr, two of Cape Town’s best cocktail and dining spots. Both offer an intimate atmosphere with cozy indoor and outdoor spaces, making them perfect for unwinding with expertly crafted cocktails and shareable plates. At Upper Union, try the ‘Smoking Mirror’, a mezcal-based cocktail with citrus and spice, paired with their standout charred aubergine with tahini and pomegranate. Over at Elgr, the ‘Celery Sour’, a refreshing mix of gin, celery, and lemon, goes perfectly with their wood-fired flatbread topped with seasonal ingredients. Both restaurants offer a tapas-style menu, making it a great way to try multiple dishes in one sitting.

7. Stroll Through Oranjezicht Market on a Sunday

The Oranjezicht City Farm Market is a must for food lovers. Open on Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesday evenings, this bustling market offers fresh produce, artisanal treats, and delicious street food. Arrive early to avoid the crowds and try the popular kimchi pancakes, my personal favorite. If you’re looking for something warming, grab a coffee with Amarula, a creamy South African liqueur that adds a unique twist to your morning cup. Their green juices are pretty good too!

8. Walk the Sea Point Promenade

Enjoy a scenic walk along the Sea Point Promenade, where you’ll see locals running, cycling, and working out. Admire the striking photography by South African artists, showcasing the country’s diverse landscapes, wildlife, and culture. If you prefer, you can also rent a bike and explore the promenade at your own pace, stop at a tidal pool for a refreshing dip (warning: it’s freezing!), and end with a well-deserved ice cream treat.

9. Take a Cable Car Ride Up Table Mountain

If hiking isn’t for you, the cable car is a fantastic way to reach the top of Table Mountain. This is one of Cape Town’s most classic attractions, but it can get extremely crowded, especially during peak hours. To make the most of the experience, try to go early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid long queues. For a more personalized experience, consider going with a guide who can provide insider knowledge and historical insights about the mountain and the surrounding area. The rotating car gives you incredible views as you ascend, and once at the top, you can take in the city from multiple viewpoints.

10. Discover the Cape Winelands

A short drive from Cape Town, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek offer world-class wines and stunning landscapes. A must-visit is Maison by Chefs Warehouse, where you’ll enjoy exceptional cuisine in a breathtaking vineyard setting. Don’t miss the quirky giant pig roaming the grounds and the chickens whose fluffy feathers make them look like they’re wearing pants—an unforgettable sight that adds to the charm of this unique spot.

11. Visit Boulders Beach and Explore Nearby Fishing Towns

Boulders Beach is home to a colony of African penguins. Walk along the boardwalks or swim in the sheltered coves alongside these charming creatures. Beyond the penguins, explore nearby towns like Simon’s Town, a historic naval base with quaint cafes and seafood restaurants. The Lighthouse Café is perfect for a casual bite, while Bertha’s Restaurant offers fresh seafood with stunning harbor views. If you’re looking for something more offbeat, grab a coffee at Monocle & Mermaid and soak in the town’s relaxed atmosphere.

12. escape to llandudno’s hidden beach

For those looking to escape the city’s crowds, Llandudno Beach is a hidden gem. Tucked away between Hout Bay and Camps Bay, this secluded beach offers soft white sand, dramatic boulders, and some of the most breathtaking sunsets in Cape Town. It’s a favorite among surfers, yet remains peaceful due to its lack of commercial development—no restaurants, no shops, just nature at its best. Pack a picnic, relax on the sand, and take in the untouched beauty of this quiet coastal retreat

13. Experience Quirky Crafting at Clay Café & Tuft

For a unique and creative experience, visit Clay Café, where you can paint your own pottery while enjoying a relaxing atmosphere and delicious treats. If you’re into textiles, Tuft offers a fun tufting workshop where you can create your own custom rug—a surprisingly therapeutic and rewarding activity. These spots offer a hands-on way to engage with Cape Town’s artistic scene and take home a personalized souvenir.

14. Take a Sidecar Tour to take in all the best views

One of the most exciting ways to see Cape Town is on a sidecar tour. This adventure takes you along scenic coastal roads, through Chapman’s Peak, Hout Bay, and up to Signal Hill for stunning views. The best part? The owner’s adorable dog often joins the ride, making it even more memorable. Riding in a vintage sidecar lets you experience the wind in your hair and the beauty of Cape Town from a completely new perspective.

15. Take a Scenic Drive Along Chapman’s Peak

Chapman’s Peak Drive is one of the most breathtaking coastal roads in the world. Stretching between Hout Bay and Noordhoek, this winding cliffside route offers spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean. Stop at lookout points along the way for incredible photo opportunities, and if you’re lucky, you might spot dolphins or whales in the distance. Driving Chapman’s Peak at sunset is a must for any visitor to Cape Town.

16. Visit Robben Island

Take a ferry to Robben Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its deep historical significance. This former prison is where Nelson Mandela was held for 18 years during the apartheid era. Guided tours, often led by former political prisoners, provide a powerful insight into South Africa’s history and the struggle for freedom. The island also offers stunning views of Table Mountain across the bay.

17. Discover the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens

These world-renowned gardens are home to an incredible variety of indigenous South African flora. Wander through the lush landscapes, explore themed gardens, and walk across the famous Boomslang Canopy Walkway, which offers panoramic views of Table Mountain and the surrounding greenery. Kirstenbosch also hosts summer sunset concerts, where you can enjoy live music in a breathtaking outdoor setting.

18. Try Local Cuisine at V&A Time Out Market

Located at the V&A Waterfront, this market features a variety of food stalls serving everything from Cape Malay curries to fresh seafood and gourmet burgers. The Knysna Oyster Company is a must for oyster lovers, while The Frying Dutchman serves up some of the best fish and chips in town. For something sweet, try Doughnut Hive for freshly made gourmet doughnuts. The market is a great place to sample local flavors in a lively setting.

19. Go Whale Watching at Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

Instead of heading to Hermanus, visit Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, a luxury eco-reserve offering an extraordinary whale-watching experience. Every visit here feels more magical than the last—whether it’s spotting southern right whales in Walker Bay, exploring the ancient fynbos-covered landscapes, or simply enjoying the tranquility of Grootbos Forest Lodge. This exclusive getaway is perfect for those looking to combine adventure with nature and relaxation.
